Friends and lovers……today a video that I wrote and directed premiers through the Museum of Contemporary Art’s online forum for film/video MOCAtv. It stars WIFE, the performance art troupe out of Los Angeles. Based on a poem that I wrote entitled The Passengers, it’s a love story that predates time and space. It’s for you Sterling….I love you so much. We were matter and anti-matter falling endlessly in love.
In The Passengers, a hybrid poem-performance set in an altered, semi-futuristic landscape, WIFE explores the cycle of life and death, and the mystical unions that are found beyond the body.
We are not the vessel. We are the passengers.
All of the major effects in this film are captured in camera. That means that this all actually happened and was recorded. We utilized glass, mirrors, light, bent mirrored acrylic (for the warping effect), and some dizzying costumes and makeup to create this truly altered reality.
In the beginning of photography and film, the audience was still able to be lulled into a state of fantasy as reality. Before the onslaught of today’s CGI effects, when we were shown a film, it was under the assumption that this was an actual event that had happened, and that somebody had recorded it onto film.
Anybody who has seen a performance by WIFE will tell you that they are still mining deeply in this world of magical realism. Their performances push the envelope as to what can be achieved through dance and technology, and then it’s served to the audience in a very intimate and spiritual way.
I thought it was important to take this element of impossibility and utilize it in The Passengers. I wanted all of the major effects to be captured in camera, as a way of opening up a portal into an alternate dimension that is accessible from our reality. Part of me wants to think that when you do create effects in camera, it still hits a primal portion of the brain that registers it separately from effects that are done in post. Lulling a jaded audience into a state waking dreams and an almost reality.
